Normal Development of the Urinary System

Abstract
Congenital anomalies of the kidney and urinary tract (CAKUT) occur in 2.3 in 1,000 births and have a major role in pediatric renal failure. To understand the pathogenesis of human CAKUT, it is essential to consider how the kidneys and urinary tract develop. The urinary system develops from the intermediate mesoderm along the posterior embryonic wall.
Initially, the excretory ducts of this system enter the cloaca. The kidneys arise from the ureteric bud and metanephric mesenchyme via reciprocal inductive tissue interactions. These interactions along with subsequent formation of nephrons and collecting system are dependent on highly-regulated genetic programs. In this review, we discuss the morphological and molecular steps required for urinary system development.
